Handmade Cards Featuring Park Lane Paper

Do you love making handmade cards? There is nothing as special as giving someone a handmade card and them realizing you made it just for them. It’s a gift in itself! I personalized a card for a good friend, so much so that it had the wedding shower theme and her name printed on it. She squealed in delight! It made my day.

Good Deal Alert

I am always on the lookout for a good deal on cardstock packs. Cute, coordinating cardstock will take all the work out of making perfect handmade cards or scrapbook pages. The other day I found the best deal at Joann.com. I was browsing to see if their Park Lane Big Deal paper stacks were on sale. These 12″x12″ paper packs have 48 pages and are regularly $19.99 but you can often find them on sale as low as $7.99. I was so excited when I realized I could get the sale price and use a 20% off my total purchase when buying on their app and picking it up in the store. Wow, what a steal. That made my paper stacks $6.39 or $0.13 a sheet! Some of the papers even have foil on them.

Have you ever been shopping and bought so many that the cashier wanted to know what you are going to do with them all? Well, that was me. I told her I was making some handmade cards. So, what would you do with this many packs of 12″ x 12″ cardstock? Leave a comment below…I need more ideas!

Eleven packs of cardstock stacked on top of each other equals my cardstock addiction problem.
My paper problem!

Getting Started

I have been itching to make some handmade cards. I flipped through each paper pack and looked at all the goodness. They have patterns, and a few sheets of tags and sayings. These will be perfect to make cards or scrapbook pages with.

A few of the stacks had a hole drilled in the top to hang at the store. At first I was frustrated that they had a hole in them. Then I noticed they are a bit longer on that side to compensate for the hole, but the pattern goes all the way to the top of the page rather than have a white tear strip with a logo on it, so more paper to work with. I will take it!

After going through all the paper packs, I found a few sheets I wanted to play with. I spent some time getting ideas for some cards. I was intrigued by a video by Jess Crafts who talked about taking 12″ x 12″ paper and using it in a way that you have no scraps. Because, really, who likes all the scraps left behind? I have a box full of scraps, because someday I may use it…. Maybe you can relate? Here is the video if you want to watch it too.

It didn’t take me long before I had a few cards made.

My Paper Crafting Journey

Paper crafting is a fun hobby and a joy to do, but it can become quite expensive. Come along to learn how you can easily make cards without a lot of money, storage space and supplies. There are so many amazing products on the market to make it fun and easy. I want to start by sharing my paper crafting journey so you can see how far I’ve come. Maybe you can relate.

In the Beginning of my Journey

When my children were young, my friends and I would get together and scrapbook. Sometimes we would gather all our things and go to one of our homes late at night, after the kids were in bed. Other times we would let our kids play while we made our pages. There may have been a time when our girls were a little too quiet and some peanut butter got involved. Let’s just say, the peanut butter won. It was in the blinds, carpet, bed, clothes, hair…you get the picture. Thankfully, we moms were together when it happened, so we laughed instead of cried and threw the girls in the tub.

There were so many wonderful memories made while we friends made scrapbook pages together. We look back now and think these were truly some of our best years.

The beginnings of my paper crafting journey started with a lot of materials. It would make my kitchen table a mess and storage became a problem.

We enjoyed these times so much that we joined a rubber stamping group. Once a month we would get together, make darling cards and scrapbook pages and place an order for at least $20. We would take turns being the hostess and getting all the benefits from that. It was very fun and filled my need to create something beautiful.

Several years later, I started selling for a rubber stamp company and was grateful for the knowledge I gained on how to run fun classes. The only problem was my collection of stamps, ink, paper, embellishments, embossing tools & powders, etc. was taking over my house and my life! I had thousands of rubber stamps…not to mention all the other goodies. I justified that it was for my business. It was beginning to be a problem.

Paper Crafting in the Digital Era

A few years went by and I found digital scrapbooking. I got so excited about digital scrapbooking because I didn’t have to have everything spread out all over the kitchen table. If I wanted to go scrapbooking with my friends, all I needed was my laptop! There was no clean up. It was easy!

It made me crazy to see all the crafting supplies I had purchased. Quite honestly, there was a lot of guilt behind it too. All the money I spent that could have been saved instead.

After many years of neglecting my “stash,” I decided to sell a bunch at a yard sale. The best part was, a lady came to my yard sale and her house had just burnt to the ground. She had $10,000 worth of stamping and crafting supplies go up in smoke. I was able to bless her life with most of my items. I was blessed as well because I was able to clean up my craft room.

Longing to Rubber Stamp

Recently I went with one of my scrapbooking/card making friends to a paper crafting class and we made some darling cards with rubber stamps. It was so nice to feel that feeling of creating something beautiful all while enjoying the company of great women. Rubber stamping supplies have been a temptation again, but I think I have found a solution.

Paper Crafting Turned Digital …Say What!?!

Santa brought me a Cricut Maker a few Christmas’s ago. I have found a way to get my card making fix with my Cricut! There are tons of digital downloads that resemble watercolor items, rubber stamp outlines, sayings, ribbons, papers, embellishments…all. the. things!

The Cricut Maker made my paper crafting so much easier. Here I made some beautiful watercolor floral stickers and stuck them on the sides to make it mine.
How did you bling your Cricut?

Cricut Design Space is a great place to design cards in. Print and Cut will become your friend when trying to replicate rubber stamping. Everything looks like it was hand made and the color scheme stays consistent. Let your Cricut do most of the cutting too. Then take all the pieces, glue them to a card base to make the layers that make it look hand made. Pop dots are great and if you want to add a little bling, you can.

Where To Get Digital Items

Creative Fabrica is the place to go for digital items. I have the all access pass and can download to my hearts content. It only costs me $52/year! Friends, that is like buying one stamp set and the embellishments to make one type of card. Plus, no storing everything in your craft room! You don’t even need to store items on your computer because you can download item and unlimited amount of times. Download, use the items, then delete them if you want. I do store a lot of them on an external hard drive, but there are options.

You may be wondering how I organize and keep track of everything. Because, truly, I have over 60,000 digital items and that is a lot to keep track of. I will write another blog post as to how I organize everything and will link it here. So, don’t get overwhelmed. I have a system that you can copy.

Paper Crafting Card Class

Fast forward to today. I just finished a paper crafting card class with some wonderful neighbors. I worked really hard to come up with some fun ideas. We made a couple birthday cards, an uplifting cards, and a thinking of you card. It was a fun night for all who came.

Four hand made cards featuring two happy birthday cards, a thinking of you and a You're the Zest lemon card. All four were made digitally first, cut out using the Cricut and put together by hand.

As I was designing on my last card, I thought I could make a flat copy and add it to my Zazzle store. Click the picture below to go to my store. On the inside it has the words, “Hope your birthday is a whole llama fun!” This card will be perfect for your pink loving friends, llama loving daughters, or even perfect for a 4-year-old. You can either buy a card(s) and they will print and ship it to you, or you can buy the digital file. The third option is to get both the physical card and the digital file. Use the digital file by printing it locally or you can send a birthday wish digitally.

This happy birthday card is made to look like a hand made paper crafted card. It features a white background layer with a hot pink layer on top that has a pink ribbon going across it horizontally. On the bottom two thirds of the card, underneath the ribbon is a piece of pink and blue confetti paper with a darling llama in the left corner. On the top third of the card is a white paper with a sun in the right corner. Placed in the middle is another piece of white paper layered on top of hot pink with the Happy Birthday sentiment a cute whimsical cake underneath it. Another pink ribbon tag is placed at the top left.

Change of Heart

Have you ever taught a class about changing your heart? You search high and low for the perfect object lesson. You want to knock it out of the park. Man, it is hard coming up with something.

I was teaching this particular lesson and it gave an idea of using a caterpillar and showing how it changes into something beautiful, a butterfly.

This got me thinking. I would love to find some sort of origami butterfly that would change from a caterpillar into a butterfly. I only had 30 minutes for this lesson and the kids I teach are only 7-8 year olds. It had to be a quick and easy.

I stumbled upon this blog post by Hello Wonderful. This butterfly would be perfect for my class. It needed to be painted. I didn’t want to deal with that mess! I put on my thinking cap and hopped over to Creative Fabrica to see what digital items I could add to my caterpillar/butterfly.

This is not a sponsored post. I just love to share great finds. Creative Fabrica is my favorite place for all things digital! They have millions of graphics, classes, ai art makers, and tons of freebies. I highly recommend them. They even have an all access pass where you can get access to ALL THE THINGS for only $4.99/mo! Sign me up…okay, I signed up months ago and have never looked back. Have fun going down the rabbit hole! (I am an affiliate with Creative Fabrica. I may get a small commission from any purchases. The good news is, the price will not be more for you.)

The Process

I first searched for a caterpillar. I found this awesome set and thought it would be perfect. Click the pictures below to get these digital files.

I went on the hunt for the perfect, colorful butterfly. Oh my, this cute butterfly jumped at me…or should I say, flew at me!

After printing up my prototype, I cut out the circle and butterfly. Next, I folded them both in half. I used a glue gun to glue the belly of the butterfly to the folded side of the circle. Before attaching the butterfly, I made sure the butterfly would be placed on the circle where it would be hidden when closed up. This picture below is what I got. This prototype needed something to spruce her up!

I felt it needed to be printed on both sides. The butterfly would look better sitting on a branch. I went to work and searched for a branch or leaves. This is what I found:

This branch was a little big for my project. I decided to use only one branch that stretched to both sides. I added my saying and here she is:

Classroom Décor – Honeybee Virtues for your Bulletin Board

Are you looking for some great classroom décor? Look no further than the Honeybee Virtues Bulletin Board set. It is a great way to decorate your classroom and a fun reminder to your students on how to behave in a positive manner. Take one virtue a week and tailor your lessons around it. Have meaningful discussions with your class on how they could, for example, “bee” more joyful. What does joyful mean? How can we show more joy? When someone is having a hard day, you could gently point out the virtue that could help them out.

Another idea would be to put your student names on clothes pins and clip to a virtue when you see a student doing well at it. Also you could hang the Bee Clean by the sink, Bee Strong by the door that goes to the playground, Bee Creative by the art station, etc. We would love to know how you use this set! Honeybee Alphabet and Welcome Banner

I’m so excited to announce the first set from the Honeybee Classroom Decoration Bundle that I’ve put together for you!

It all started when I saw this alphabet set from Creative Fabrica. I knew I had to make some kind of classroom alphabet with it. Imagine my surprise when I found the matching clip art! I had to make the magic happen!

Instant Digital Download PDF File for Printing and Decorating

The first set I worked on was the Honeybee Alphabet. I love flag banners, so I thought a alphabet flag banner would be so cute. These were made to be printed up on 8.5″x11″ white cardstock or photo paper. To make a draping alphabet banner, cut out images along each flag edge, string them up on a long ribbon with some added bling between the letters using pompoms or ribbon bundles and then drape the banner across a bulletin board. You may find the alphabet to be too long and heavy. If this is the case, do half of the letters on one ribbon and the other half on another ribbon. Then drape them in two rows. If the flag banner is just too much for you to accomplish, simply cut each page in half and hang the letters next to each other across the top of a bulletin board. Easy-peasy!
